Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Laura and I am an artist living and working from my home in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland.
Being at the waters edge, listening to the waves going in and out and staring out at the horizon is something that will always fill me with inspiration and leave me feeling energised.
When I was growing up we spent a lot of time at our family holiday home in Portrush. Some of my best childhood memories are of rockpool fishing with my sister, body boarding with my cousins and evening walks along the West Strand after a Morellis ice cream sundae. When I got my first watercolour set I used to paint little seascapes to remind me of my happy place. I would stick them all around my room so I had my own little sea view. When I grew up I wanted to be an artist.
After leaving school I studied art and design for two years. My love of the sea was the subject of a lot of my projects. Unsure of what to do next I worked in a hotel and nursery for a few years before becoming a full time Mum. When my third child was around one year old I started experimenting with my creative side again. After trying different styles, mediums and ideas, I found that seascapes were still my favourite thing to paint.
Although I don’t live beside the sea, I take regular trips to my favourite spots along the Antrim coast and Portrush, when I can. I take photographs and sometimes sketches. I have collected lots of objects from the beach that I like to have around me when I’m at home painting. I use acrylic paint and a combination of brushes, palette knives and other tools to create textures, layers and marks on the canvas. I like to let the process of painting take over and find it very therapeutic. My work does not replicate details of particular places. I prefer to leave a vast, empty horizon so a viewer can be reminded of their own favourite sea view or memory and feel the emotion and atmosphere I have tried to capture in my own way.
